Chapter 1

The Surprise

On a hot, blistering sunny day two teenaged siblings were traveling through the Sahara Desert to reach a huge city. They had already walked for a few hours and their destination was still a long way away. Everything around them was quiet except for the occasional howl of the wind.

“How much farther do we have to go?!” complained Chloe, the younger of the two.

“Will you quit complaining? We’re only about another hour away,” said an exasperated Kyle.

Kyle was the leader of the two. He always stayed focused and was very brave. Chloe was fifteen, only one year younger than Kyle. She did the cooking and the cleaning at home and took up her mother’s position of the housework. You see, Kyle and Chloe’s mother died only several months ago and now the teens had just a father and he was always on the go so the teens had to look after themselves and the house. It was only two months ago when their father told them to go to the big city. They knew they had to go through the Sahara Desert but the trip took longer than they expected. Their father always went through the Sahara Desert, but since their mother died they had to take up more chores. The teens were almost to their destination, but unfortunately a startling sight stopped them dead in their tracks. Out in the distance was quite a large city.

“We’re not there yet. Are we?” asked Chloe.

“No, father described the city to me and it’s nothing like what he said,” said Kyle, “It must be … an illusion?”

“If it’s an illusion, then how come we both see it?” asked Chloe.

Kyle thought about it and then convinced his sister to go with him to check the city out. She finally agreed and they set off for the mysterious city.

The city was the most beautiful and sparkly city they’d ever seen, with tall buildings and even stands where people sold their merchandise but there was only one problem. Where were all the people?! The teens found this a bit odd. First of all, this was never here before or else their father would have told them and second of all every city this big had many people. The teens walked further on and found the most beautiful place in the whole city. It was the ruler’s palace! It stuck out far more than the rest of the city. There were fountains and beautiful plants, vines, and flowers. The teens walked around the palace and through the lovely gardens. The path they were walking on took an abrupt turn and they stumbled upon a repulsive scene. Dead in front of them stood what looked to be a mummy. In fact, this mummy was standing in an awkward position. His right foot was in front of his left foot. His right arm was covering his face while his left arm remained at his side. The teens were terrified at the sight and wanted to run away but something kept them from running. Whether it was fright or curiosity that kept them, the two didn’t know. Kyle was brought back to his senses before Chloe was and noticed a scroll in the left hand of the mummy. Kyle took a step toward the mummy, launched his hand out and grabbed the scroll. He ran back to Chloe hoping he

wouldn’t be attacked. Once he got to Chloe, the teens ran out of the palace gardens and into the streets then found a place to sit down. Kyle opened the scroll very carefully for the paper was stiff and ready to crumble. It was written in hieroglyphics and around the words were pictures. “Well? What does the scroll say?” asked Chloe anxiously.

“I think that mummy was… the ruler of this city!” replied Kyle in astonishment.

“What?” exclaimed a confused Chloe.

“That’s what this scroll says,” answered Kyle.

“Aren’t rulers buried with special stuff on them and wrapped around them?”  She questioned.

“Yes, they are. What if something happened to him that caused him to become a mummy? Maybe that’s why the people left!” said Kyle with excitement

“Come on Kyle, try being realistic!” said Chloe.

“I am! It’s just how can you be realistic after that sight? I mean there’s no way that there can possibly be any logical explanation for what we just saw! Even you have to admit that!”

“Okay, okay, but there still has to be some explanation, logical or not!” yelled Chloe.
