Chapter 1

Strange Feelings

Anastasia McNelson was an average fifteen year-old girl, but there was only one other thing that made her different from all other girls her age. She had special powers! She would have dreams that predicted the future. She would have strange feelings of something, which came true, and sometimes she’d even hear voices that no one else could hear. This might sound incredibly strange to you and it did to her at first. Then there came that one chilly day that changed her life forever.

It was a cold May morning and Anastasia (Ana for short) was waiting for the bus, when suddenly she heard a feminine voice whisper in her ear.

“Anastasia,” said the voice.

Ana whipped around to find nobody there. Ana was now mad. See, this was the third time today that she heard voices. Then she heard the same bird that she hears every morning. It was almost like it was trying to say something to her. Ana shrugged it off and then the bus came. She got on and pondered, what was going on with her? When she got to school she put her things in her class and rushed to greet her friends.

“Hey guys, you won’t believe what had happened to me these past few days!” exclaimed Ana with excitement. Her friends listened to everything she had to say. She described her futuristic dreams, her predictions, and even the voices she’s heard. After she was finished, her friends gave her a disbelieving look and started laughing hysterically.

Ana stomped her foot and said angrily, “I’m not kidding, it’s been happening to me!”

Her friends laughed even harder. She glared at them for a short while. She turned to walk away but noticed someone watching her. It was almost like he was listening in to the conversation. His look was almost like he understood her completely! She brushed it off and thought that she was just being overly suspicious. She walked away still feeling the strangers eyes watching her.

Chapter 2

The Stranger

Ana went through her first two classes fine but she still felt that there was something different about that stranger. She went to her science class and sat down. When she looked up she saw the same person who eavesdropped on her conversation. They both stared at each other for what seemed like forever. Then the teacher came in.

“Hey guys! How was your weekend?” asked Mr. Andrews with his normal enthusiastic voice.

Not many people said anything.

“Oh and before I forget, I’d like to introduce you to a new student and I hope you make him feel welcome. This is Peter,” continued the teacher.

Ana could’ve sworn that she saw a smile flash across Peter’s face but it could’ve been a trick of the light.

Earth Science went fairly well except one incident.

“Okay let’s do some lab work. It’s pretty large and you’ll need your goggles,” said Mr. Andrews handing out papers.

Everyone got up and Ana suddenly stood there frozen.

“Ana, are you all right?” asked Mr. Andrews in a concerned way.

Ana came back to reality and replied, “Yeah, just sort of dazed off there.”
Mr. Andrews said okay and went back to his work. Ana looked over at Peter and he had a concerned look on his face.

She ignored it and went to her lab. After a few minutes she looked over at her friend Cameron and watched her at her lab. Suddenly Cameron put some purple powder in her bottle, which was over a fire. Ana knew what to do. She rushed over to Cameron and pushed her out of the way. Suddenly Cameron’s bottle exploded and a fire burst out. Mr. Andrews rushed over to the explosion and put the fire out.

“Cameron! I gave you exact directions as to what to put into the bottle!” exclaimed Mr. Andrews angrily.

Cameron apologized and Mr. Andrews stormed off mumbling to himself.

“Thanks Ana! How’d you know that was going to happen?” asked Cameron.

Ana looked at all the curious faces around her including Peter who looked a little scared and angry.

“It was just kind of a hunch,” she replied quietly to her fellow peers.

Peter glared at Ana, and Ana sat down and wished the bell would ring soon. The rest of the school day went quick. As soon as the last bell rang, Ana dashed out the door. Ana was walking to her bus when suddenly someone grabbed her wrist, pulled her behind the big oak tree and pinned her there. The person was Peter! Now that Ana saw him up close she noticed his jet-black hair, and the lightest baby-blue eyes she ever saw. He seemed a lot stronger than when she saw him from far away. Peter covered her mouth with a strong hand and said in a whisper, “Don’t scream. They might catch us.”

Ana gave Peter a questioning look.

“Look, I can help you with your powers,” he continued in a slightly louder tone.

Ana was extremely shocked and slightly confused.

“Now, do as I say and don’t speak,” he said as he released her.

Ana rolled her eyes and followed him.

The two walked back into the school and into the auditorium. Peter walked up the steps and pulled out a brick from the wall. Ana heard gears grinding and turned to the floor and saw the floor moving.

“I’ll go down first,” said Peter climbing down a black ladder.

Ana nodded and after a few minutes Peter called up to Ana and said, “Okay, you can come down now.”

Ana climbed down and finally reached the bottom. There was a huge step, too far to jump so Peter helped her down.

“So where are you taking me?” asked Ana who was at this time starting to get curious.

“You’ll see,” he replied in an annoyed tone.

Peter brought Ana to an underground lair.

“Hey, Cody! I’ve got her!” yelled Peter. “Who?” asked a slightly deep voice from the other room.

“That Anastasia girl you wanted to see,” replied Peter.

Ana heard a glass shatter in the other room and running footsteps. Cody came out and he appeared to be around Ana’s age. He was tall and had light green eyes and light brown hair.

“Okay, will someone finally tell me what the heck is going on here?” questioned Ana now getting very frustrated.

Peter and Cody looked at each other and Cody said, “You might want to sit down for this.”

Peter led Ana to a chair across the room. As soon as all of them sat down Cody began to talk.

“Ana we know what’s wrong with you. We know you have special powers, too. The truth is that you’re a prophet.”

At this point, Ana was beyond confusion. She was in shock and replied, “WHAT?!”

“Ana, hear us out. You’re a special kind of prophet, very powerful. See, we know this because we are prophets as well, only not as powerful as you. When Peter told me about your claims I knew you were very special, but to all this good news there is some bad news. Some really bad people called the Death Shadows are after you and we need to protect you,” continued Cody in a quiet tone.

“Well can you tell me what these guys look like so I can be aware?” asked Ana who was very impatient.

“Well they’re extremely tall and they always wear black cloaks. You can never see their faces or hands or feet. They wear this masquerade mask and if you see their face that usually means you’re done for because you got in their way,” said Peter looking straight at Ana.

Ana looked at them both and started to cry.

“Ana, what’s wrong?” asked Cody who was afraid he said something wrong.

“I’m doomed then. I saw them in my dream and they almost killed me!!” cried Ana covering her face.

Peter and Cody looked at each other then, to Ana. At this point they felt really sorry for her.
