# 3 Amber Oak and the Red Rug Room
by Ceara Comeau
Chapter 1
Once upon a time there were two girls named Gwen and Amber.. One day Amber went over to Gwen’s house. While they were playing in Gwen’s room, Amber needed a bathroom break. There were several doors in Gwen’s house and Amber was not sure where the bathroom was. So she picked the door on her right. When she opened it she found herself in the most beautiful part of the house. It was a room with white walls and a scarlet carpet, with twin staircases that went to the second floor. After a while Gwen wondered where Amber was so she went looking for her. Suddenly Gwen found Amber in the red rug room. She yelled out to Amber, “Amber, we’re not allowed in here!”
Amber replied, “Haven’t you ever wondered what was in here?” Gwen stuttered, “Yeah, sure but my mom says no.”
Amber agreed not to go any further, but the rest of the day she kept wondering about the red rug room.
That night Gwen invited Amber for a sleepover. Amber was very curious about the red rug room. Amber waited until she was sure Gwen was asleep. She went into the red rug room and up one of the staircases, then glancing back quickly to make sure Gwen wasn’t following her, she walked a little ways down a dark hall and then saw three doorways and stopped. “Which door should I choose?” she wondered. She decided on the middle door and she walked through. When she got through the door, she stared in awe as she looked all around the room then went back into the hall. The hall was different then the room.
She went back into the room and looked out the window and saw the ocean. She said to herself, “Where am I?”
Chapter 2
Gwen woke up and looked to where Amber slept and found she wasn’t there! She knew where Amber would be. When she got to the red rug room, she ran up the other staircase and looked down the hall and noticed a door open. As she walked through the doorway she saw Amber at the window.
“Amber!” she said, “What are you doing in here? You’re not supposed to be in here.”
Amber responded, “So you knew about this?”
Gwen hesitated and said, “No.”
Amber spoke up and said, “Where are we?”
Gwen answered, “I don’t know, but I think I know who would.”
“Let’s go outside,” said Amber.
“I don’t know about this,” said Gwen nervously.
“Oh! Come on,” pleaded Amber.
Gwen reluctantly agreed. When they got outside they were shocked at the enormous size of the building. It looked like a mini Buckingham Palace! There were gardens and the oceans in the distance, “Why is this place in your house?” asked Amber.
“I don’t know, maybe we can look around more,” suggested Gwen.
Amber nodded.
They started walking around and after awhile they found a statue. The statue looked like a princess, and there was a plaque that said, “Here lies Elizabeth Wilson princess of Wales.”
“Both girls looked at each other and wondered what “Princess of Wales” meant. Were they in Wales, England?
Chapter 3
They decided to keep looking in the Castle. They came to the master bedroom and found tons of books; it looked more like a library than a bedroom. So they went through the books to see if they could find anything about Elizabeth Wilson. Finally they found a book about Elizabeth, and it said that she was a princess of Wales at one time and her summer home was Wilson Castle in Freeport, Maine! She had a lot of royal subjects, but they either died or went to another castle, but the princess drowned on a ship heading to Freeport, Maine.
“She was one of the most famous princesses in England,” said Amber.
“This still doesn’t explain why this place is in your house!”
“Maybe someone in your family knows something about this, but the question is, who?” said Amber.
Both girls thought for a moment then Gwen spoke up and said, “I know who would know!”
“Who?” asked Amber.
“My grandfather!” she replied with an excited expression.
When the girls got through the door in the princess’s room they went to find Gwen’s grandfather. Finally, they found him in his study, "Grandfather,” cried Gwen.
“Yes, what is it Gwen?” Her grandfather called.
“We need to ask you something,” said Amber.
“Well, I’m listening,” said grandfather.
“What do you know about the red rug room and the middle closed door on the second floor?”
Gwen felt happy she could let that out. Suddenly her grandfather looked deathly pale and said, “That door is closed for a reason.”
Both girls looked at each other and asked why.
“Because, I made a mistake,” he replied sadly.
Both girls sat patiently waiting for grandfather to keep going.
“I knew the princess, in fact she was my best friend.”
The girls were in awe, but sat quietly.
“People think that she died from that boat sinking, but nobody knows how. I think the only reason the door is going into her room is because after she died a servant went to clean out her closet and found the red rug room. Now I believe that princess Elizabeth wanted someone to find out the cause of her death. I know it wasn’t old age because she was sixteen years old when she died. Considering I’m too old you girls must find out what happened. Luckily we don’t have a time limit but the sooner the better.”
The girls puzzled over this while thanking Grandfather and left the study to go back to the castle.
Chapter 4
When the girls finally got to the castle, Amber spoke up and said, “How do we find out how she died?”
Gwen spoke up with a scared voice, “Maybe she was murdered, but by who, and why?”
After a moment of silence Amber said, “Why don’t we ask people who knew her, other than grandfather!” Gwen agreed.
